Where

Women on the Water takes place on the gorgeous Missouri River Breaks.

Fire Writing will take participants into the heart of the famed Bob Marshall Wilderness.

Both courses begin and end in Missoula, Montana.

Permitted activity takes place in the Helena-Lewis & Clark National Forest and the Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument.

Semester Credits

Although not for college credit, these adult courses provide invaluable opportunities to expand your knowledge, skillset, and résumé. “Women on the Water” and “Fire Writing” combine immersive learning with hands-on experiences, allowing participants to delve deeply into environmental topics, philosophical discussions, and conservation practices. These week-long adventures, guided by experienced instructors, foster personal and professional growth, making them a valuable addition to any résumé and an enriching experience for those seeking to enhance their understanding of both themselves and critical ecological issues.

Women on the Water

Join WRFI for a week-long paddling excursion through the Missouri River Breaks, one of Montana’s most iconic Wild and Scenic rivers. As we travel on the water, participants will forge an intimate connection with this endangered place, exploring critical questions along the way:
  • What can we learn from resilient riparian ecosystems threatened by climate change?
  • How do we navigate and respond to tumultuous waves of change in our lives?
  • What unique perspectives and strengths can women bring to waterway conservation efforts?

This journey includes:

  • 7 days total, with 5 days on the river
  • 61 miles of calm water paddling in canoes or kayaks
  • Daily guided discussions on environmental philosophy
  • All meals, snacks, gear, and transportation
  • Open to women and female-identifying adults
  • Maximum group size: 12

Fire Writing: Disturbance and Renewal

Embark on a transformative journey with WRFI and Freeflow Institute in Montana’s remarkable Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex. This collaborative course delves into the profound questions surrounding wildfire’s impact on the American West:

  • How does wildfire shape the landscape, and what historical factors have led us to today’s challenges?
  • What role does disturbance play in fostering new life and energy in ecosystems?
  • What balance of control should we strive for in natural processes?

Participants will engage in:

  • 7 days total, with 5 days immersed in the backcountry
  • Daily meals, snacks, group gear, and camping accommodations provided
  • 2-3 hours daily of experiential learning and creative critique
  • Instruction led by knowledgeable guides from WRFI and Freeflow
  • Maximum group size: 12

Join a small group of adventurous, curious adult learners to explore fire ecology firsthand and participate in creative practices inspired by our natural surroundings. Gain insights, forge connections, and contribute to meaningful discussions while experiencing the beauty one of Montana’s most spectacular wilderness areas.
